A national newspaper recently unveiled its list of the top 50 music albums of all time. Unsurprisingly, many legends were represented – The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac all made the cut. Joining them were modern icons like Madonna, U2, Radiohead, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift.

But as I read through the list, I couldn’t help but think about the albums that were missing—those seminal releases that defined entire generations. Titles such as: Bat Out of Hell by Meatloaf, Blondie’s Parallel Lines, and Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms; all game-changers when they hit the airwaves in the late 1970s and 80’s (I was in my teens at the time – so yes, this dates me!)

These albums weren’t just collections of memorable tracks. Their cover art became instantly recognizable, etched into pop culture. Brothers in Arms even earned a place in tech history, as it was often used to showcase the sound quality of early CD players in the 1980s.

‘Best of’ lists are a staple content for media – especially as the festive season approaches. Case in point being Bing Crosby’s Merry Christmas album, featuring the enduring White Christmas, which has sold over 15 million copies since its 1949 release. Many would argue this album deserves top-billing as well. It shows how music can invoke huge personal emotion and transport us back to key moments in our lives, as well as showing how it has played a prominent role in society.

What made this particular ‘best of’ list stand out was its storytelling. It didn’t just rank albums by sales, it explored how each one was conceived and shaped the music industry, and why it resonated with listeners. It also invited readers to reflect, respond and share their own favorites – which I did!

That same philosophy drives our work at Spoken Word Communications. Our executive presentation training is rooted in the power of storytelling – capturing attention from the first word, sustaining audience interest, and inspiring action through an emotional connection. Above all, we help equip leaders to deliver presentations that are not just heard, but are memorable.

If you’re ready to elevate your presentation skills and become one of the standout performers in your field, we’d love to support you. And while we’re at it—what albums would make your Top 50?

Hosting an industry networking event is no small feat. It demands significant commitment – both in time and resources. From choosing the right venue and crafting a compelling topic, to designing the format, managing hospitality, and curating the guest list, the workload is substantial to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day.

Yet, one critical element is often overlooked: clarity on what the host organization actually wants to achieve and what success looks like? Without a clear objective, even the most well-attended event can miss its strategic mark.

I recently attended a number of industry events, with strong turnouts and positive energy in the room. But what struck me was how little the hosts revealed about their own role. Despite sending event invitations and reminders beforehand, their presence on the day was understated. Their formal welcome was brief, focused solely on encouraging everyone to enjoy the hospitality and encourage networking, with no insight into the organization’s purpose for hosting – despite acknowledging many new faces in the room. There were no display panels to spark conversation or set the tone, and no handouts to reinforce key messages.

Some may argue that hosts shouldn’t dominate the spotlight or spend too long talking about themselves. I get that. But let’s be honest, there’s no such thing as a free lunch! Most guests expect at least a short, purposeful introduction that explains who the host is, why the event matters, and what they hope guests will take away. Done well, it doesn’t detract, but adds value.

In these moments, a golden communications opportunity with a captive audience is either seized – or missed.

At Spoken Word, we help organizations make the most from industry occasions. We work with you to define your event goals, shape the narrative, and guide your guests toward meaningful action. Our storytelling approach creates instant connection, sustains interest, and leaves lasting impressions – while strengthening your brand reputation.

If you’re preparing for an event and want to strike the right balance between being a gracious host and achieving your goals, contact Dave@spokenwordgroup.com to find out how we can help.

Set Clear Objectives for Your Industry Event: Define what your organization hopes to achieve and how success will be measured to ensure the event aligns with strategic goals.

Communicate Your Purpose Effectively: Provide a short, purposeful introduction to explain who you are, why the event matters, and what guests should take away, adding value to the experience.

Use the Event as a Communication Opportunity: Seize moments during the event to share your story and message, creating engagement and leaving a lasting impression.

Enhance Your Brand Through Storytelling: Leverage storytelling techniques to connect with guests, sustain interest, and strengthen your organization’s reputation.

Partner with Experts to Maximize Impact: Work with professionals like Spoken Word to craft a compelling narrative, shape your event’s messaging, and achieve meaningful results.

Stack up your Security
Use multiple layers of protection—like strong passwords, firewalls, and encryption—so it’s harder for cyber criminals to break in.

Back-up your Data
Keep your back-up files them on a separate system that hackers can’t reach, so you can bounce back quickly if something goes wrong.

Practice before it’s Real
Run simulated attacks to see how well your systems and teams respond. It’s better to find weak spots now, than in the middle of a crisis.

Watch for trouble in Real Time
Use tools that alert you the moment something suspicious happens – the faster you spot it, the less damage it causes.

Get the Right People in the Room
Cyber threats affect more than just IT. Bring in your legal, PR, and customer service teams, so you’re ready to act fast, and able to deal with multiple stakeholders, using credible spokespeople that can deliver key messages effectively and protect your brand reputation.

Keep Customers in the Loop
If your website or systems go down, have a back-up page ready to share updates and answer questions. It helps build trust when things go wrong.

Protect your Reputation
Tell customers and stakeholders what happened, what you have fixed, and what you’re doing to prevent a re-occurrence. Transparency earns respect.

The post Simple steps to stay ahead of cyber-attacks: first appeared on Spoken Word Communications.

Imagine turning to your favorite shopping store—one you rely on for quality, reliability and trust —only to find online error messages and empty shelves. Then add in how you feel, knowing that your personal data may have also been stolen. Frustration quickly escalates into concern and worry; and then loyalty starts to fray.

For thousands of Marks & Spencer (M&S) customers, a recent cyber-attack did exactly this; disrupting supply chains, reducing store footfall, slowing sales growth and reputing to cost the company upwards of $409m (£300 million). It affected customers’ everyday routines, raised serious data concerns, and called into question one of the UK’s major multinational brands.

And M&S was not alone; other well-known companies such as Harrods and Co-op also experienced similar attacks, which disrupted their retail operations.

A Growing Threat

Cyber-attacks are no longer isolated incidents—they’re becoming business as usual. Despite investing in sophisticated firewalls, data protection systems and employing skilled cyber-security teams, recent events have shown that even the best defenses can be breached. What’s particularly striking in the M&S case is how quickly this crisis also affected their high street stores and led to supply chains stalling, and shelves emptying. The ripple effect highlighted how inseparable online and in-store operations have become.

To their credit, M&S responded with a proactive communications campaign to acknowledge the situation and put customers’ needs front and centre. In times like these, transparency and empathy aren’t optional—they’re essential.

Planning for the Inevitable

Facing a cyber-attack is no longer a question of if, but when. Many organizations are already witnessing more frequent attacks, and their preparation needs to be strategic and technical. Critical steps to consider include:

Planning Ahead: cyber-attacks must be built into your risk management strategy. Preparing for the expected and unexpected before a crisis hits is a fundamental part of running an organization, and is the only way to stay one-step ahead.

Communicating Early: clarity and decisiveness matters. Understand what you need to do internally, let customers and key stakeholders know what’s happening and what you’re doing about it—quickly, honestly and openly.

Training Your Spokespeople: Whenever speaking to the media, customers, employees, or supply chain contacts, your spokespeople must be confident, clear, and credible. Poor communication can often do more damage than the attack itself.

What the Experts Say:

The recent cyber incidents have underscored the growing urgency for robust digital defenses. Dr Richard Horne, CEO of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), described the attacks as “a wake-up call to all organizations,” and urging leaders to strengthen their resilience against increasingly sophisticated threats. Echoing this sentiment, Daniel Teacher, CEO of T-Tech, noted: “No cyber-attack is entirely preventable. Businesses should have controls strong enough to minimize the impact.” These statements reflect a broader consensus that whilst absolute prevention may be unrealistic, proactive investment in cyber security protection measures are a business imperative.

At Spoken Word, we specialize in all manner of crisis communications. Our global team works with clients to craft clear, tailored messaging and prepare spokespeople to deliver them with confidence—even under pressure.

The phrase, ‘The only constant in life is change,’ mirrors the advances in communication technology over the last four decades. We have seen how the internet, online business and social media sites, and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed our ability to communicate easily and quickly across the world.

However, what comes with this advancement is industry-specific language, that can be confusing and potentially a turn-off – even the term, AI, is referred in its abbreviated form rather than full title!

I attended a recent customer experience webinar, and the presenter talked about how AI is rapidly becoming an integral part of consumers’ purchasing decisions. The abbreviations: LLM, DL and ML were referred to throughout the discussion, but were unclear. As the webinar was in listen-only mode, I searched online for a description of these abbreviations. They stand for large layer model (LLM), deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) and are ways in which machines are programmed to learn patterns and connections between words, and derive data from algorithms.

However, in In quest to understand what these abbreviations meant, I missed parts of the presentation. My attention then waned and I didn’t pick up on the key takeaways. I’m sure the webinar organisers would be horrified to hear this and see this as a missed marketing opportunity. Unfortunately, this is what can happen when presenters use language that audiences don’t understand.

For those who are involved in the cutting edge of technology or operating in complex industries, you play a vital role in opening our eyes to further opportunities. However, you need to be mindful that by using industry abbreviations, jargon and language, you risk alienating members of the audience who do not have your same level of industry knowledge or insight. This language conundrum extends beyond AI to industries such as oil and gas, utilities and energy.

Presenters need to find a way to bridge this knowledge gap by using clear and simple communication to ensure everyone in the audience is on the same page, and avoid inaction.

Help is on hand. There are ways you can keep audiences on side from start to finish – even if you have to use technical language on occasions – and avoid falling into the trap of assuming everyone knows what you know! For more information on this and other presentation training techniques that will hasten rather than stall business progress, contact us at Spoken Word Communications.

The post The AI Language Conundrum first appeared on Spoken Word Communications.

Is your organization planning to attend any trade exhibitions in 2025? If so, now is the time to ramp up your preparations.

Exhibitions can boost brand awareness, showcase new products and generate sales leads. But they also need a return on investment, as it can be a costly exercise to design and build an eye-catching stand, secure a prominent position in the exhibition hall, and take up employees’ time manning the stand.

While the stand attracts attention, human interaction seals the deal. But, when I visit exhibitions, all too often I see employees talking among themselves and looking disinterested – remember visitors can see from afar your body language and whether you are enticing or discouraging them to come on to the stand!

I believe these behaviors are down to a lack of preparation and clarity on what the organization is seeking to achieve from a trade exhibition. Some key pointers to consider:

Those manning the stand need to fully understand the exhibition goals and what success looks like.

Experience and knowledge of the services and products being promoted on the stand is important. But so are other skills such as elevator pitches, story-telling and promotion of key messages; which are often left wanting.

Knowing how to create warm, friendly and welcoming connections with visitors, and using empathy, body language and listening skills to understand their interests and requirements.

Refresher presentation training is essential for all staff on the stand; particularly for those delivering keynote presentations or sitting on speaker panels, amid the noise and distraction of a bustling exhibition arena! It’s unlikely anyone will be walking around the exhibition with a purchase order and ready to commit on the day. Training will help you achieve positive face-to-face conversations, communicate key messages in an engaging manner, and encourage follow-up meetings.

Spoken Word Communications can help with this. We train organizations on how to make positive audience connections , and promote services and products in a way that is engaging, informative and memorable. Above all, we want to help you ‘exhibit’ your company as the stand-out organization!

The post Sealing the Deal at Exhibitions first appeared on Spoken Word Communications.

As 2024 draws to an end, with nights growing longer and colder, there’s festive magic in the air. Homes are getting decked out with decorations and twinkling lights to provide the perfect backdrop for the holiday season.

The sound of carols and traditional songs remind us of cherished memories and inspire a sense of togetherness and goodwill. However, the quality of these enchanting sounds is only as good as the musicians having their instruments finely tuned, knowing their sheet notes and cue of when to play – and being adaptable to correct any unexpected musical mishaps that may occur! This requires extensive preparation, co-ordination and rehearsal to ensure they give their best performance.

The holiday season is also a time where many industries shut down, and staff take a well-earned break, to spend time with family and friends. For the energy industry, it remains business as usual, with producers, transporters, suppliers and control centres working round-the-clock to deliver electricity and gas to our homes; ensuring everyone can enjoy the festivities.

Just as musicians rehearse for a flawless festive performance, the energy industry meticulously prepares to handle expected and unexpected events; ensuring a reliable energy supply throughout the festive season.

This includes having trained spokespeople who can react quickly to events and manage close scrutiny from the likes of media, politicians, regulators, customers and local community in the event of a crisis. This can be a daunting task – particularly for those who have recently joined the energy industry, or been promoted to operate in this role and:

show concern for personal safety and the safeguard of assets, facilities and environment

provide accurate, open and timely information about a crisis

maintain a positive corporate reputation and strengthen trust with key audiences

All this at very short notice, and in front of the media who are itching to ask questions on every aspect of the incident and will immediately broadcast your response! A spokesperson can make or break people’s perception of organization during a crisis situation.

If you need support with your crisis communications preparation, Spoken Word is on hand. We are a global media, crisis communications and presentation training company. Our trainers can provide specialist crisis spokesperson training, strategic input, and an extra pair of hands in the event of an emergency.

The Power of Exhibitions & Trade Events

Is your organisation participating in an exhibition or trade event this year?

If so, then you will be competing for attention in a crowded market.

No doubt you are already well advanced in your preparations to have an eye-catching stand located in a prominent position to capture attention and interest. However, have you taken steps to ensure your staff is trained to get their key messages across amid the noise and distraction of a bustling exhibition arena? This includes engaging customers at the stand, delivering keynote presentations, and sitting on panel discussions.

Are you a glossophobe?

It is easy to assume that strong public speaking skills come naturally, but this is most often not the case. Public speaking is a skill that can be taught but requires preparation, practice, and rehearsal to achieve the best outcome.

Some people relish walking up to a complete stranger and sparking a conversation or presenting before an audience, but they’re definitely in the minority. For many, it can be a nerve-wracking event. There is even a name for the fear of public speaking, Glossophobia, with an estimated 75% of the world’s population sharing this concern.

Key Tips for Conversations and Presentations

Know your audience. You will meet different types of people at an exhibition. Some will be highly knowledgeable and interested to learn more, others will be at the opposite end of the spectrum – and everything in between! You need to be able to adapt your conversation accordingly to increase the chance of capturing attention and interest.

Know your material. Nothing switches off an audience faster than a presenter not being clear, concise and motivated about their organization’s products and services. Know what you want people to take away to encourage follow-up conversations and sales leads. Spend time preparing, considering your audience requirements, and if applicable, personalizing someone else’s speaking notes to make them your own.

Know your delivery. Decide on the key points you want an audience to take away and use these as a basis of your conversation on the stand or event presentation, using interesting facts, figures and anecdotes to bring the content to life. You also need to use your words, voice and body language in a way that captures attention from the start, maintains interest throughout, and leaves the audience wanting to know more.

Need Coaching?

If you are planning to exhibit at a trade event this year, Spoken Word Communications can train you and your team to develop a powerful delivery, capture audience interest from the start, and make your key messages memorable to ensure you stand out from the crowd!

Hydrogen, an increasingly viable alternative energy solution

The record-breaking temperatures experienced this year in the USA, Europe and Middle East, as well as devastating wildfires seen around the world, have again focused public opinion on reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change.

The transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy is pivotal to achieving this goal; and if the popularity of a recent energy conference in London – Scaling up the European Hydrogen Economy: Unlocking Opportunities & Investment – is anything to go by, hydrogen as an energy source is increasingly becoming a viable solution.

The Conference Event

Hosted by Aurora Energy Research and attended by over 470 industry representatives, policy makers, manufacturers, banks and investors. Featured thought leaders and experts addressed the opportunities and challenges of hydrogen development. Topics included government policy, infrastructure financing, developer opportunities and offtake agreements.

To demonstrate the scale of change required, one speaker likened the use of hydrogen as a future energy source to that of creating the railway network in the 1800’s.

Audience Poll: Top Three Barriers of Hydrogen Use

An audience poll showed these top three barriers to the use of hydrogen.

offtake requirements

government subsidies

network infrastructure

Surprisingly, public acceptability came well down the list. However, when Spoken Word Communications Associate Clive Hawkins raised this in the QA session, the speaker panel acknowledged the importance of proactively engaging with society and, in particular, ensure the safety case is proven.

In Summary

The Aurora Conference provided an excellent overview of hydrogen development in Europe and highlighted how hydrogen can play a key role in energy transition. Despite many political, investor and operational hurdles to jump, there is a big industry appetite for change. Although this will require a compelling story to be told around the use of hydrogen and having strong industry engagement with society, in the journey to a fossil-free future.

Do you know the difference between EBITDA and PBT, or what GAAP stands for?

If not, then rest assured. You are not alone!

A vital skill for many business professionals is to ensure their audience understands the meaning behind the numbers. However, most people struggle to understand the complexities of business finance. Presenters often lose the attention of their audience when they use accounting methods, financial jargon and reporting processes to tell their story.

Recently, one of our clients faced this challenge. They wanted to strengthen their finance leadership team’s delivery skills when presenting at Board and Executive updates, departmental events, team meetings and one-on-one briefings.

A way of achieving this goal was to undertake our presentations training.

Because our client was mindful that it is often difficult for finance team members to take time out of their busy schedules to attend training sessions, they decided to incorporate it into their global finance offsite event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

We trained all finance team members from across the world at the same time and in the same way.

Over the course of two days, Spoken Word colleague Glenn van Zutphen and Clive Hawkins trained 50 team members in full-day sessions. They focused on techniques to promote the positive attributes of the participants. This included how to be a credible and engaging presenter, capture audience interest from the start and make key messages memorable. They covered ways to tell the story and make information meaningful. These are essential elements for any business support function, particularly for the finance team where their story is told in numbers!

Our outreach complemented the finance team’s training requirements.

We are based around the world with extensive in-house and journalistic experience. We’ve worked in over 20 countries across five continents in areas of corporate, finance, and operations. And most importantly, we are able to provide global and local insights to delegates during the training.

In summary, the program proved extremely successful.

Delegates were fully engaged and eager to learn. They were also keen to share their experiences with colleagues and implement new techniques into their future presentations. Our training sessions received over 90% positive rating for the quality of material and delivery.
