What the World Cup Taught Us About Leadership

The World Cup is among the biggest sporting events on the planet — nations competing for one of sport’s richest prizes and generating extraordinary excitement wherever it’s played.

Few countries feel that intensity more than Saudi Arabia, where soccer — or football, as they call it — is a dominant national passion. The Kingdom is already looking ahead to hosting the 2034 tournament.

So for Spoken Word to lead a two-week leadership communication program in Saudi Arabia for one of our prestigious clients — right in the middle of the 2026 World Cup taking place across the USA, Canada and Mexico — was both an honor and a unique opportunity. The timing and atmosphere created a powerful backdrop for leadership development training: energy, ambition, pride and a shared sense of high performance under pressure.

Global Tournament and Classroom

Football’s cultural presence in Saudi Arabia is unmistakable. Offices and cafés were alive with conversation and anticipation — and that energy flowed straight into the classroom. Each day’s training session brought together different nationalities as diverse as the teams competing in the tournament, creating a learning environment that mirrored the global nature of modern leadership.

Morning conversations began with match analysis, tactical debates and bold predictions — exchanges between colleagues from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Norway, Canada, Argentina and many more. That diversity enriched every exercise and every discussion, reinforcing a core leadership truth — perspective is a performance asset. Leaders who understand different cultures, audiences and pressures make better decisions and communicate with greater impact.

The World Cup quickly became a metaphor for leadership communication. Clarity, discipline, teamwork and composure under pressure are universal behaviors — whether you’re presenting to senior executives, stakeholders, or simply watching your national team battle for progression. The passion people felt for their countries mirrored the emotional commitment leaders must project when communicating vision, direction and accountability.

Two Trainers, One Leadership Standard

Just like the international teams competing on the pitch, Spoken Word had two coaches leading the charge — Matt from the USA and Clive from England — only this time they were on the same side. They even embraced the football fever, getting up in the early hours to walk to a nearby café with a huge outdoor screen to cheer on their respective national teams as England and the USA played their matches!

Across the fortnight, Matt and Clive delivered two complementary communication leadership programs; sometimes individually, sometimes together, but always with the same outcome: leaders communicating with greater intention, confidence and authority.

Communication Behaviors Strengthened

Across all sessions, Matt and Clive saw a big lift in communication and presentation confidence, delivery and output. Leaders became more intentional in how they structured messages, more disciplined in how they used their time and more attuned to the emotional cues that shape audience engagement. Their executive presence strengthened, their stakeholder awareness deepened, and their ability to stay composed under pressure grew. Spoken Word’s training and feedback helped delegates refine behaviors and elevate their leadership impact.

By the final session of each day, the transformation was unmistakable: individuals who began a few hours earlier seeking techniques and tools to support their delivery finished by communicating with clarity, conviction and intent — all the hallmarks of effective leadership.

Why This Matters

As an organization grows and faces more complex environmental, operational and societal challenges, leadership communication becomes a critical differentiator.

Spoken Word’s training program in Saudi Arabia strengthened leaders’ ability to influence decisions, build trust, communicate risk, align teams and represent their organization with professionalism.
